House prices march onwards

Data from HM Land Registry show prices continuing their upward trend.

East Sussex properties have risen on average by 5.7% over the 12 months to the end of September, with prices rising equally across all property types.

This is slightly below the south-east average (7.8%) but equal to that of England and Wales (5.7%) - although interestingly, flats have performed better, and detached less well than the average in England and Wales.

But back to East Sussex. The 5.7% rise translates to an average property price here which had passed the £200k milepost for the first time since March 2008, after the property market had begun its downward slide of the 'credit crunch' a month earlier.

More specifically Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven average values are now over the £250k mark.

Post Halloween pumpkin soup

Driving round Newhaven last week it seemed like every house had a pumpkin in the window, or something ‘Halloweeny’ going on! So on the assumption that there are lots of spare pumpkins out there, we thought we’d share with you this pumpkin soup recipe...

Serves 6
10 mins to prepare and 50 mins to cook
135 calories / serving

  • 1kg pumpkin, unpeeled
  • 1 onion, cut into wedges
  • 3 cloves garlic, skin on
  • 3 sprigs rosemary
  • oil for drizzling
  • 125g (4oz) pancetta or smoked bacon pieces
  • 400ml (14fl oz) chicken or vegetable stock
  • 250ml (8fl oz) milk

  1. Heat the oven to gas 6, 200°C or 180°C with a fan.
  2. Cut the pumpkin (or you can use squash) into 3cm slices; remove seeds, saving a few for the garnish.
  3. Put pumpkin on a baking tray with the onion wedges, garlic and rosemary, and drizzle with oil.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes, then add the pancetta (keep separate in one corner of the baking tray).
  5. Bake for a further 20 minutes until the pumpkin is soft inside and brown around the edges.
  6. Reserve the pancetta and rosemary.
  7. Remove the pumpkin skin, then place the flesh in a food processor along with the onions and garlic paste squeezed from each clove.
  8. Add the stock and milk. Blend until smooth, adding extra milk if needed.
  9. Place in a pan, season and heat to taste, and serve with pancetta, pumpkin seeds and rosemary.

    Thanks to for the recipe.

Words are not just empty ones

We were really pleased to get this email recently from a customer, as it shows we really do live up to our tagline...

Hi Nick

A big thanks to you and all your staff for your help over 5 Ashurst Road.

Your "We do more" is actually true.

All your work was carried out promptly and with no unnecessary fuss.

Advice was to the point and timely.

You kept us informed without prompting.

All contact with all staff was carried out in a courteous and helpful manner.

You helped me in a number of ways which were not strictly part of your brief.

We have used a number of agents over the years. Your service was head and shoulders above anything we have received before.

My best wishes

Mr PN [name withheld]
